Children’s Clothing Sizes Explained

Many do not understand how the clothing sizes of children are determined. We shall try to clear the air and help everyone understand the subject that seems almost more complex and hard to comprehend than calculus itself.

First, there are baby and infant sizes, these are the very smallest clothes that are available and are essentially the exact same sizes for boy and girl baby clothes. The clothes in this size range tend to be broken down by age into months, with most companies also including weight and height guidelines to assist parents in selecting the right sized clothes for their baby.

The next step up the ladder are the toddler clothes. These tend to range from 1T up to 4T; they tend to have a fuller cut around the bottom to help give extra room to a child learning how to walk who still has a diaper to contend with. These clothes tend to be a bit baggy to help give a bit of growing room to help slow down the needs to purchase clothes quiet as quickly.

Continuing up the ladder we have children’s clothes in the sizes 2 to 6x. These clothes are more fitting than toddler clothes and do not have room around the bottom for a diaper. The clothes are scaled to fit the age of the child for the size, for example, a 4-year-old child would wear size 4 clothes. There are some variations with these clothes that range from some petite sizes up to tall sizes.

The children’s clothes tree branches from here, with girls and boys going separate directions. Girls proceed to clothes that are sized from 7 up to 14 with the following variations: regular, slim, and chubby. There are also petite and tall variations within this breakdown, which makes shopping for girls a bit more complicated. Once a girl is past size 14, they move to junior sizes. Junior sizes are for the girls whom are starting to develop a figure, and start all over at a size 0. Junior sizes run in odd numbers: 1, 3, and 5 for example while women’s clothes run in even sizes.

Boys’ clothes are much easier to size, with them running from size 6 to 20. Within this range, there are slim, regular, and husky variations. This makes the idea and practice of shopping for boys clothes much easier. From the size 20 boys clothes they progress into men’s clothing, which is generally measured in inches.
